Medical Residents at McMaster University are being given the opportunity to participate in an innovative visual literacy program called The Art of Seeing™. This program has been rigorously evaluated, and is the first of its kind in Canada. Through experiential art gallery sessions, Residents are introduced to works of art as part of their medical training. Using facilitated observation, discussion, and narrative writing, they develop greater skills in perception and critical thinking, while nurturing empathy, compassion, and self-care. Nicole Knibb developed The Art of Seeing course in partnership with the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. She will discuss why they decided to create this program, and how it is being implemented and received.
